Taormina has an enchanting natural and landscape heritage, but it is also marked by the different populations who lived here over the centuries. The Ancient Theatre dates back to the Greek period. It was built in the third century B.C. It was built in the third century BC exploiting taking advantages from the morphology of the hill and the beauty of the landscape. Later under the Roman domination the city assumed greater importance, becoming “capital of eastern Sicily”. The Romans created another symbol of the city, the Naumachie. The city was later under the rule of the Arabs, Normans and Spaniards, who contributed to the creation of the present village.
