Discover the Aeolian Islands
The seven pearls of the Mediterranean Sea
“A real corner of paradise, since 2000 UNESCO World Heritage“
The Aeolian Islands are 7 pearls scattered in the Tyrrhenian Sea, located in the north of Sicily. The rocks of the volcanic islands rise mysteriously above the extraordinary blue waters, recalling the times when Eolus, the god of winds, reigned in these lands and, according to legend, he himself created them. The local population believes that the islands have been inhabited since then and that the ancient deity still resides somewhere among the pieces of land. This archipelago, small, but fabulously beautiful includes 10 small islands and 7 larger: Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Alicudi and Filicudi. Only two of these volcanic islands contain volcanoes currently active: Stromboli and Gran Cratere on Vulcano. Stromboli is the only volcano in Europe that continues to erupt from two millennia. At night, the fiery peak of this volcano can be seen from afar. This is why the Greeks nicknamed Stromboli the “lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian Sea”. Watching this show from a boat is something indescribable and extremely exciting.
Each of these islands is a unique and indescribable place that you have to live it to understand it. In fact, did you ever think you could live a stay in total tranquility at the foot of an active volcano? In In Stromboli it is worth visiting the House of Ingrid Bergman, place where the actress lived during the filming of the film “Stromboli, Land of God”. To make this landmark more evident, the islanders painted the walls of the house in bright red.
Or, what do you think of a stay in an island like a spa? I’m talking about Vulcan, famous for its black volcanic sand beaches, hot mud, hot springs, healing climate and lovely nature. Not to mention the hydrogen sulfide baths, that attract tourists from all over the world to immerse themselves in these healing springs and relax in the natural whirlpools of bubbling geysers.
Salina, on the other hand, is a green and flowery oasis where there is no shortage of nightlife. After arriving on the island,it is evident that human settlements have been built in the dormant craters of the two volcanoes. Here we cannot fail to mention the home of Pablo Neruda, where he lived during his stay on the island and where the famous film The Postman was filmed.
Panarea, different from others, is a “luxury” island where celebrities arrive with their luxury yachts during the summer to immerse themselves in the island’s glamour. Since years it hosts a film festival as well.
Lipari is the largest island and houses the Archaeological Museum of Lipari divided into several buildings in the historic center. Lipari is a treasure, with a charming center, magnificent beaches and breathtaking views.
